Applying to a public school in the Western Cape

Public schools in the Western Cape take applications for Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 8 in one on-time window run by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). The window is in the year before your child starts.

When to apply

For children starting in 2027, the on-time window ran from 10 March to 14 April 2026. SchoolPath expects later windows to follow a similar pattern, around March to April each year, and shows those dates as expected until WCED announces them.

Apply during the on-time window if you can. You can still apply late, but popular schools may already be full.

How to apply

WCED explains how to apply on its learner admissions page. You can usually apply to more than one school, so it is worth including a school you are likely to get a place at, as well as the ones you would most like.

What to have ready

Each school tells you exactly what it needs, but schools commonly ask for:

• your child's birth certificate
• your child's immunisation record (for Grade R and Grade 1)
• proof of where you live, such as a municipal account or lease
• your child's most recent school report (for Grade 8, or when changing schools)

Check the school's own list before you apply, and keep copies of everything you send.

How schools decide

Each public school has an admission policy that says how it ranks applications when it has more applicants than places. Many give priority to children who live close by, who have a brother or sister at the school, or who come from a school that feeds into it. Read how catchment areas and feeder schools work.
