School fees, no-fee schools and exemptions
How public and independent school fees work, and where to find help with fees.
Fees vary a lot between schools. This guide explains the main types so you know what to ask.
Public schools
Public schools either charge fees or are no-fee schools. At a fee-paying public school, the fees are agreed by the school's parents at a meeting each year.
Families who cannot afford the full fees can apply to the school for a fee exemption, which can reduce or remove the fees. A public school may not refuse to admit a child because the parents cannot pay. Ask the school for its exemption application form and the deadline to apply.
Independent schools
Independent schools set their own fees. On top of the yearly fee there may be an application fee, a deposit to secure a place, and extras such as uniforms, camps or transport. Many independent schools offer bursaries or discounts for siblings. Ask the school what is available.
Preschools and daycares
Preschools and daycares usually charge monthly fees and often a registration fee. Ask whether meals, nappies, aftercare and holiday care are included.
